WAPELLO, Iowa — Flooding this summer that forced the evacuation of Oakville and much of the area around it led some Wapello school officials to worry about the potential loss of enrollment for the district.

However, superintendent John Weidner told the school board that registration numbers collected last week showed only six Oakville area students had not registered.

“It’s a lot better than what we thought,” he told the board. Final numbers will be known Oct. 1 when the official enrollment count is made.

State aid is calculated on student population, and a large drop in the number of students would affect a district’s budget the next year.

Secondary school principal Steve Bohlen reported his registration numbers were basically neutral, with nine students lost, but nine new ones added. He said the nine students lost included the six Oakville students.

Elementary principal LaDonna Underwood said her registration numbers showed 10 new students were added to the student population, but 18 students left. She said many of those students were from families of school staff who resigned after last school year.

In other action, Weidner reported two sub-categories of junior high students had failed to reached required achievement scores in math and reading, which will place the district on a federal watch list.
