CAMANCHE, Iowa — Norm Criss of Fulton, Ill., is battling cancer for the second time, and he urged everyone at the Camanche High School track Friday for the Clinton County Relay for Life to continue to fight along with him.
Criss was the honorary chairman of this year’s event, which featured 42 teams and at the beginning of Friday’s event was about $13,000 short of meeting its fundraising goal for the year of $127,500, said event chair Karen Roode.
She was confident, though, that the team members participating would find a way to raise the rest of the money.
“People will come through,” she said.
Criss told the crowd that Friday’s event was an opportunity to celebrate life, to remember those who had lost their battle with cancer, and to renew their commitment to fight the disease by raising money for the American Cancer Society to fund research into new treatments and education.
Criss also stressed the power of prayer.
“We are an answer to prayer,” Criss said of himself and the other cancer survivors at the event. “Prayer works. I’m here today because of answered prayers.”
Criss said the event also was an opportunity to pay back everyone who had supported him through difficult times.
“What people have done for me, all of you, I need to do it back,” he said.
