UPDATED: A 47-year-old Davenport man died after the house he was living in caught fire Thursday night, a police official reported today.

Another man was injured and treated by ambulance medics at the scene of the fire at 602 W. 16th St., which started about 8:10 p.m., Fire Chief Mark Frese said. He had been pulled from the basement of the home.

Michael Raymond McCune was taken from the second floor of the single-family dwelling and was not breathing at the time, Frese said. Davenport firefighters and medics performed CPR on McCune as he lay in the front yard. Medics hooked up intravenous fluids before he was taken to a waiting ambulance. McCune was transported to Genesis Medical Center-West Central Park, Davenport. He died at the hospital from injuries due to the fire.

An autopsy on the body is scheduled later today.

The back porch received the majority of the damage from the fire, Frese said, adding that the fire was out in about 20 minutes. As the fire burned, heavy black smoke poured from the inside of the home.

Scott County Court records indicate the house was built in 1886 and is jointly owned by Normal Freeman and Gary Williamowski.

Ronald Holmes, 49, said he was asleep when it started.

“I heard, ‘fire, fire,’ and there was so much smoke,” Holmes said, adding that at least four people, including the two victims, live in the home. “The blaze was in the back.”

Freeman’s daughter, Angela Freeman, 25, of Davenport said the fire is suspicious. She alleged that one of the residents of the home with whom she and others in the neighborhood had argued earlier in the day was seen running from the fire when it broke out.

The fire department was on the scene investigating arson allegations. Detectives assigned the Davenport Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division also are involved in the investigation.

Frese said that the American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities Area was called in to assist the residents.
