A Rock Island man scheduled to go to trial next week for the New Year’s Day murder of LaShaune Wright last year pleaded guilty to one murder count Friday and received 40 years in prison.

Steven Douglas Hill, 44, has been in custody since the day of his ex-girlfriend’s death when he called police to report the crime and claimed he couldn’t remember what happened.

Rock Island police said Wright, 28, died the morning of Jan. 1, 2007, at 714 5th St., Rock Island, where she had been living with Hill until a week earlier when she moved out.

Wright died from injuries to her head and neck and stab wounds to her back, chest, abdomen and neck, police said.

Wright’s body was found in the back yard, and Hill was inside waiting for police. He told officers he remembered fighting with Wright inside and outside the home and taking a knife from her.

Hill was examined by an expert in neuropsychology last year to determine if a sleep disorder altered his state of mind the day Wright was killed.

As part of Hill’s plea, three additional murder counts were dismissed. He must serve 100 percent of the sentence.

Hill’s trial was to start Wednesday.
