One of the many hidden treasures in the Quad-Cities is the Third Sunday Jazz Series. The third Sunday of each month Polyrhythms, with funding by from Riverboat Development, Doris and Victor Day Foundation and others, brings accomplished musicians into the Redstone Room to do
workshops and concerts.
In January at The Odd Tones workshop, my grandson, with his trombone, and another young man, with his trumpet, learned to improvise on stage with the band. The mystery was why other young members of school jazz bands weren’t encouraged or given credit for attending such a worthwhile event.
July’s workshop was given by a very accomplished jazz vocalist, Adekola. She not only taught the audience a few tricks of the singing trade, but got them dancing.
Aug. 17, Saxophonist Ernest “Khabeer” Dawkins and his Straight Ahead Quartet will be in concert from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Redstone Room.
The real treat will be at 3 p.m., the workshop. For $3 students will have a session with an award winning player and educator. These workshops are designed to demystify jazz, as well as nurture, educate and inspire musicians and music appreciatorians alike.
Thanks to Polyrhythms and those who fund this hidden treasure.
