CLINTON, Iowa — A man who says he found a bug in his salad is suing the Hy-Vee in Clinton for negligence.

Kenneth Schmidt said in a petition-at-law that he bought a salad prepared by store employees on March 29. Schmidt claims he began eating the meal and discovered a ``large, partially alive insect imbedded in the salad.''

The petition claims that Hy-Vee was negligent because it failed to inspect the ingredients and the salad for insects and foreign objects. It also claims the store failed to properly package the salad following preparation.

Schmidt is seeking compensation for injuries and damages for past and future medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional impairment and emotional distress.

A Clinton store manager says details of the case have been turned over to the corporate offices of Hy-Vee.

Corporate officials could not be reached for comment.
