A toddler from Fairbury, Ill., died in an apparent drowning Friday while riding in a boat on the Rock River with his grandfather.

The Rock Island County Coroner’s Office was awaiting preliminary results Monday for an autopsy conducted on Carter L. Tjarks, 2 1/2-year-old son of Lacey Hatcher and Steve Tjarks of Fairbury and Geneseo, Ill. Fairbury is northeast of Bloomington, Ill.

Brian Gustafson, chief deputy for the Rock Island County coroner’s office, said the boy was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m. Friday at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis. He was riding in a boat near Shady Beach in Geneseo, Ill.

Gustafson said the boy’s grandfather suffered a diabetic incident and later couldn’t remember what happened to his grandson, who was visiting. Two fishermen found the boy’s body several hundred yards down river shortly after the incident, Gustafson said.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Vandemore Funeral Home in Geneseo.
