A natural gas leak has forced the evacuation of 47 homes in the area of Sunburst Drive in Bettendorf.

A private contractor working on the street in the 3200 block of Sunburst Drive struck a 2-inch gas line around 3:50 p.m. today, according to Lauran Haldeman, spokeswoman for the City of Bettendorf.

She said 22 homes along Sunburst and 25 homes on Maplecrest Road, which runs parallel to Sunburst to the south, have been evacuated. Residents were told they should be able to return to their homes in a couple of hours, Haldeman said about 5:20 p.m.

The leak was stopped just before 5:30 p.m., using equipment the contractor had on site, Haldeman said.

Sunburst runs off 29th Street north of Maplecrest Road.
