Columbus School District back on federal watch list

COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa — After a one-year absence, the Columbus School District is back on a federal watch list for failing to meet student proficiency goals in reading and math.
The news was provided to the school board Monday during its regular monthly meeting by curriculum director Tara Paul.
According to 2007-08 test scores, several categories of students failed to reach annual yearly progress goals in reading and math. In reading, these included All Students (grades 3 to 5, 6to 8 and 11); low socioeconomic status (SES) (grades 3to 5 and 6 to 8); English Language Learner (ELL) (grades 3to 5); and Hispanic (grades 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 11). Categories that failed to meet district math goals included All Students (grades 6 to 8 and 11); Low SES (grades 6 to 8); ELL (grades 6 to 8) and Hispanic (grades 6 to 8).
Schools that continue to miss AYP goals can eventually be forced to use some of their federal Title 1 funding for specific programs and face other sanctions.
In other action, the board approved a 3.92 percent salary increase package for substitute support staff, bus driver activity and police security.
