A rural Cedar County man who pleaded guilty to clubbing his father with a shotgun was sentenced Wednesday to five years in federal prison.

Ryan Siders, 37, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for Northern Iowa in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He pleaded guilty Feb. 6 to one count of being a felon in possession of firearms.

The beating occurred Nov. 2, 2006, during a confrontation at Siders’ father’s mobile home in rural Cedar County.

During the incident, Siders broke several windows, threatened his father with a gun, broke furniture, threw a knife at the man and beat him with a 12-gauge shotgun. He hit his father several times, breaking his arm, cracking his ribs and causing head injuries. Siders then hit a china hutch with the gun, breaking the gun’s stock and knocking over the hutch.

Siders admitted he was convicted Dec. 7, 1989, of felony burglary in Rock Island County. In 2001, he was convicted in Cedar County of OWI third offense, and in 2005 he was convicted in Cedar County of third-degree burglary.
