IOWA CITY — Authorities say a hiker has found a body in an Iowa City park where a missing University of Iowa political science professor was last seen.

Police say the body was found Sunday morning in a secluded portion of the 185-acre Hickory Hill Park.

Authorities have said UI professor Arthur Miller was last seen Tuesday morning walking into the park with a high-powered rifle.

The clothing found on the body and a blanket near it are similar in description to the items police have said Miller was wearing and carrying with him. A rifle was found underneath the body, said Sgt. Mike Brotherton.

“Clearly, at this point, everything points to it being Mr. Miller,” he said.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Monday to confirm the identity and the cause of death. Brotherton said it appears to be a suicide.

Miller is facing bribery charges alleging he solicited sexual favors from female students in exchange for better grades. His family members have said he was suicidal. His disappearance caused an unsuccessful two-day search of the park.

Brotherton said a retired sheriff’s deputy who had gone into the park to search some wooded areas found the body about 30 yards off a deer trail. It was found a couple hundred yards from where Miller’s car was located last week, he said.
