CLINTON, Iowa — Dick Grimm was being remembered Monday as a man who dedicated his time and energy to keep his community safe.

Grimm, who served as fire chief in Charlotte for 30 years and was a member of the fire department for more than 50, died Sunday of cancer. He was 73.

Charlotte Mayor Marty Jahn, who served with Grimm on the fire department, said Grimm retired as chief about two years ago but remained on the department.

“He wanted to retire from that, too, but we wouldn’t let him,” Jahn said.

Jahn said Grimm was instrumental in getting new equipment for the department and emphasized training for his firefighters.

“The Charlotte Fire Department wouldn’t be where it is today if not for the contributions Dick made,” Jahn said.

Jahn said Grimm also served for many years on the City Council.

Grimm also helped organize disaster drills in Clinton County and received the Governor’s Award for meritorious service in 1984.

Grimm’s daughter, Gail Hosette of Camanche, said her father had a big heart and liked to look out for others.

“It was just my dad’s nature to be kindhearted and helpful,” she said. “We are very, very proud of him. We always have been proud of him.”

Jahn said firefighters from across the state are expected to attend Grimm’s funeral, which will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Charlotte.
