Here are answers provided by Norm Voelliger, candidate for the Bettendorf City Council, 1st Ward. A special election will be held Sept. 2 to fill a vacancy left by a council member who resigned in June.
Q: Why did you choose to live in Bettendorf?
A: I have lived in Bettendorf all of my life. My family started Bettendorf’s first auto service station Feb. 22, 1922. I feel Bettendorf has much to offer and has excellent public services, such as police, fire, public works, parks, library and museum. My family has been educated in Bettendorf public schools and live and work in this area. They have seen it grow to the Premier City it is today.
Q: Why are you running for City Council?
A: I LOVE THIS CITY and am very proud to say that I live in Bettendorf. My life has been dedicated to serving the city and the public and I wish to continue.
Q: What is the single biggest issue facing Bettendorf?
A: Maintaining our level of city property tax rate and providing excellent city services, such as police, fire and public works, which we all use the most. We are currently spending $19 million on road improvements this fiscal year. This is very much needed! NO NEW TAXES!
Q: What is the city’s greatest asset?
A: Our excellent city services, schools, parks and access to almost anywhere. We cannot forget all the community volunteers (past and present) who serve unselfishly.
Q: What issues are important in the 1st Ward?
A: To continue our street and alley improvements. The future alignments and relocations of I-74 and the downtown Bettendorf development for new and current business and new street locations. To add new business to all commerical areas in the ward.
Q: How can the 1st Ward be improved?
A: People should continue to take pride in their neighborhood and their personal property to increase their own value for the benefit for them and our community.
Q: Is the city relationship with the Isle of Capri good for taxpayers?
A: YES! It’s a business! The taxes generated from the Isle Of Capri hotel properties will pay for the new event center. The city receives an additional $1.9 million for the city’s general fund and the Scott County Regional Authority receives revenue to support many local non-profit agencies. It brings people to the area who pay hotel room taxes also. .
Q: What concerns are you hearing from 1st Ward residents as you campaign?
A: Many people want improvements on streets and alleys. (This I have worked on very hard, with many improvements to all of our city) Also they would like more extended bike paths throughout the city. The city is spending over $3 million on bike paths this and next year. People are anxious to see the Jovan shopping area developed and what kind of stores will go in there.
Q: In your opinion, what makes a good alderman?
A: A good listener, use of common sense and taking care of (constituents’) needs as soon as possible. I follow up on calls received of city concern and refer to the proper department head for action.
Q: What skills do you have that qualify you to represent the people of the 1st Ward?
A: City experience, city knowledge, city history, dedication, commitment and leadership. I always try to do what is best for the citizens and the city.
