Davenport police temporarily shut down the entire Five Points intersection on the city’s west side late Saturday and early today after an accident involving a car and a motorcycle left a passenger on the motorcycle seriously injured.
The accident also resulted in a brief foot chase when the driver of the motorcycle fled the scene, police said.
The accident at the corner of Hickory Grove Road, Division and Locust streets occurred about 11:15 p.m. Saturday.
Police gave this account of the accident:
A BMW 330 was northbound on Division Street and stopped in the lefthand lane for a red light at the intersection with Locust when the driver made an improper turn onto Hickory Grove Road headed northwest.
A motorcycle heading south on Division with a green light and the right-of-way collided with the passenger side of the BMW. A passenger on the motorcycle was thrown from the vehicle and was being treated for life-threatening injuries early today at Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme Street, Davenport.
The driver of the motorcycle fled the scene on foot, police said, but was apprehended about three blocks from the scene, hiding in a tree on Davie Street. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of apparently minor injuries.
The intersection was expected to be closed until about 2 a.m. while police continued to investigate the accident.
Further details, including the identities of the people involved, were not immediately available.
