Edwin Arceo didn’t hesitate to compare Muscatine’s new quarterback with local legend Jon Phillips.
Both are patient. Both are accurate.
Newcomer Kyle Allgood proved plenty good enough in Thursday’s Week 1 opener, shouldering the load in leading his Muskies to a 27-13 win over host Davenport Central.
Just like Phillips would have done.
But Arceo went a step further when gushing over Allgood.
“He throws a little harder for sure,” Arceo said. “He’s probably a little more athletic and probably one of the fastest guys on the team.”
Pretty high praise for someone whose predecessor threw for a league record 2,785 yards last season.
But Allgood did his best Phillips impression, passing for 268 yards and running for another 115 and a touchdown. He finished 28-of-40 with one interception and accounted for all but 17 yards of Muscatine’s offense.
He connected with Arceo and Nolan Hagerty for touchdowns and despite a few sacks and a fumble, didn’t appear flustered.
“(Phillips) had great composure,” Allgood said. “His pocket presence was amazing. I’m still trying to sharpen that ability.”
Muscatine (1-0, 1-0 Mississippi Athletic Conference) built a 14-0 lead by halftime and limited Central (0-1, 0-1) to 66 yards of offense and four first downs.
The advantage bumped to 27-0 less than 2 minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils weren’t finished.
Junior Cody Lambert ran the ball in for a 23-yard score with 8:47 to play and went on to finish with 137 yards on 16 carries.
Two Muscatine fumbles kept Central’s hopes alive, and with 3:42 left Keyvan Rudd caught a touchdown pass from Nick Bakeris.
“I didn’t know what to expect from the team,” first-year Blue Devils coach Mark Roering said. “We’re putting in a new system, but it was big to throw them into the fire in a real varsity game. They found out what it’s like.”
Central looked much sharper after halftime, but Bakeris struggled in the face of constant pressure. He completed 9 of 25 passes for 111 yards in his first varsity start.
The Muskies got 155 receiving yards from Arceo, the returning all-stater who plays everywhere. The senior did miss a rare extra-point attempt and came up wide right on a 41-yard field goal in the closing minutes.
All in all, first-year Muscatine coach Tony Napierala had few gripes.
“I was real happy with the effort,” he said. “We’ve got athletes, and we try to use them. But we’d do well for four or five plays and give up a sack.
“I was real happy with (Allgood). And the thing about him is, he’s going to keep getting better.”
No doubt the other MAC teams in attendance took notice.
