Boys golf

Sterling 169, Rock Island 172

The skinny — Home cooking served the Golden Warriors well Thursday afternoon at Emerald Hills GC, Sterling’s home course.

The keys — Strength at the top. The margin of victory might have been achieved by Sterling’s No. 1, Josh Kunde, who stood three strokes clear of any Rocky golfer.

The twist — Rocky showed more consistency up and down the lineup, with just six shots separating 1 from 6.

Bureau Valley triangular

The skinny — Lance Grymonprez led Orion to a 3-shot win on the road, as the Chargers held off Bureau Valley 182-185, with Cambridge a distant third.

The keys — Consistency for the Chargers, with Grymonprez’s 42 bolstering a pair of 45s in the win.

The twist — Bureau Valley’s Dillon Mattingly, the Storm’s No. 1 on Thursday, shot a season-best 43.

Morrison triangular

The skinny — A pair of 38s led Sherrard to a 13-shot victory over Prophetstown, 158-171, with the host Mustangs finishing third.

The keys — What else? The 38s, which led Tiger golfers Nick Coonce — a transfer from Evansville, Ind. — and Trevor Leinbach to earn co-medalist honors.

The twist — Prophetstown’s Drew Wiersema will have better days. Wiersema shot a 41 on Thursday. Virtually any score above 40 over nine holes is a rarity for the Prophet senior.

Girls golf

Rock Island 176, Rock Falls 196

The skinny — The Rocks stayed unbeaten in duals with a 20-shot victory over a game Rock Falls squad.

The keys — Steady play once again from Ashlen Lincoln. Her round of 40 (6-over at Saukie) made for good leadership at the top.

The twist — All four scoring Rocks were under 50. No. 2 Kelsey Kernan, at 43, was two shots better than any of the Rockets.

Alleman 175, AlWood-ROWVA 210

The skinny — Katie Moore shot a 3-over round of 37 at Saukie, leading the Pioneers to a romp.

The keys — Solid rounds from Abby Frideres (41) and Melissa Lackey (45) really augmented Moore’s solid medalist effort.

The twist — It’s not unheard of for two teams to share a home course; it is unusual for the pair to play duals against separate opponents, without playing head-to-head, on the same day.

Girls tennis

Alleman 6, Galesburg 0

The skinny — In a match already clinched before rain halted doubles play, the Pioneers dropped 12 games in six singles matches.

The keys — Hannah Schrader (No. 1) and Samantha Good (No. 2) were state doubles qualifiers a year ago. They had routs Thursday; Good didn’t drop a single game.

The twist — Galesburg, which seems to have hit an early slump, had its toughest match at No. 3 singles, where Alleman’s Pili Mendoza was in control for a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Sterling Newman 6, Geneseo 3

The skinny — Singles depth — with wins at Nos. 4-6 singles — led the Lady Comets to a nonconference win.

The keys — Newman’s Katie Kipping got five matches in at state last year, and used that experience to a 6-0, 6-0 blowout at No. 1 singles.

The twist — The match was tightly contested. After Kipping’s victory, the other five singles matches required tiebreakers (four with super-tiebreaking third sets) to determine a winner.

Kewanee 5, United Township 4

The skinny — Close as you can get. At No. 3 doubles, Kewanee’s team won a 10-8 third-set super-tiebreaker to clinch what otherwise was an even dual.

The keys — 2006 state singles qualifier Jessica Bourque got off to a solid start at No. 1, with a straight-set victory.

The twist — After several years of struggle, the dual might be a jumping-off point for the Panthers, who won two doubles matches, both in straight sets.
