Jackson County supervisors appoint county attorney

MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Chris Raker, assistant Jackson County attorney, was appointed Tuesday afternoon as the new county attorney.

Raker replaces his boss, Phil Tabor, who was appointed last month as an associate judge in Clinton County.

Tabor’s resignation was effective at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Supervisors appointed Raker at their regular meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Board members had posted their intent to make an appointment, but had not said it would be Raker, although it was expected. Supervisors said they received no applications for the job.

County residents have 14 days to file a petition to request a special election to fill the county attorney position. However, because of new state laws, a special election would not be held until spring.

Raker was appointed as the county attorney until the next regular county elections in November 2010. Auditor M. Joelle Deppe issued the oath of office to Raker.

Raker began as assistant county attorney in April 2007. He previously worked in the Palo Alto County Attorney’s Office.

“Chris is a very nice young man,” Supervisor Jack Willey said. “I wish he had more court experience. But I asked if he was ready, and he said he would work hard at it.”

The other two supervisors said they looked forward to working with Raker.

“I feel like I’m following my bigger brother who was an All-American. I have to fill some really big shoes,” Raker told supervisors.

Raker said he will seek applications for an assistant county attorney to fill his previous position.
