We’re only a week into football season, but new trends are quickly emerging in the MAC.

Naturally, the biggest eye-opener was Assumption’s loss to Burlington. Not a close loss, either.

It would be ridiculous to suggest Assumption is going to free fall from perennial conference contender to cellar dweller, but the Knights are going to labor through this season, perhaps more than any other in recent history.

Watching Assumption’s defense struggle to pick up and adjust to Burlington’s offense woke me up.

This conference is not a foregone conclusion top to bottom, or even 1-3.

Bettendorf played well against Pleasant Valley, and is still the heavy favorite. But Burlington, Muscatine and North Scott have good enough offenses to hang with the Bulldogs on a given night.

And PV is no pushover, totaling almost 200 yards against Bettendorf.

Defense will be at a premium with this many capable offenses.

The coming weeks will tell us much more.
