T.G.I.F., Quad-Cities. At 6 a.m. it’s 57 degrees with overcast skies in the Quad-Cities. Today will be partly sunny with a high near 72 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy. The low will be around 52 degrees. Looking ahead to the weekend, expect partly cloudy skies and a high in the low 70s with a chance of rain Saturday and Sunday nights, according to the National Weather Service.

That sounds a whole lot better than those on the East Coast where rain and wind from Tropical Storm  Hanna has sparked tropical storm watches and warnings all the way from Georgia to Atlantic City, N.J. causing some residents to shutter houses, stock up on food and sandbags, and cancel schools and sporting events. Hanna, which could gain hurricane strength, was expected to make landfall sometime early Saturday.

Road closures

Road construction is in high gear with more than two dozen projects affecting city and/or county roads in the Quad-City region. Check the list before you head out this morning for local closings. And check out our gas-price guide for the cheapest prices at the pumps in the Quad-Cities.

Greenvalley opens Dog Park

Moline’s grand opening of its new Greenvalley Dog Park located across from Greenvalley Sports Complex on 50th Avenue will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

This free event features local representatives and resources, pet-related vendor booths and products, rescue organizations, adoptable pets, raffle prizes and more. Food will be available. Those attending are invited to bring their furry friends to enjoy the city’s new dog park.

Representatives from the Rock Island County Animal Care & Control will be available to conduct pet micro-chipping for $10. A low cost vaccine clinic will also be offering rabies and distemper vaccines for $10 each. Rock Island County residents may also register their pets at the event.

The new Greenvalley Dog Park provides two acres of fenced, safe space for dogs to run and play off leash. Amenities include dispensers and bags for waste removal, dog drinking fountain, fake fire hydrants, public restrooms, benches,  trash cans, and fencing (5-feet high). The dog park is open daily from dawn until dusk.

The grand opening event is being sponsored by the City of Moline, Rock Island County Animal Care & Control and Q-C PAWS.
