Saturday's high school highlights
Football
Aledo/Westmer 40, West Hancock 6
The skinny — In a rare Saturday afternoon contest, Aledo/Westmer scored the game’s final four TDs in a nonconference matchup of West Prairie Trail Conference teams (they play in different divisions).
The keys — Quarterback Brett Anderson threw for three TDs and ran for a fourth in the Aledo victory. Like many other Green Dragon QBs, he has the ability to both run and pass well.
The twist — Ethan Ball, who was the target of two Anderson TD passes, is the Green Dragons’ top wrestler, winning several summer tournaments. Matt Dawson, who ran for two long scores, is one of Aledo’s top sprinters in track and field.
Boys golf
Geneseo Invitational
The skinny — Moline holds off Ottawa by one shot and Dixon by two to win the 21-team invite, held at Maple Bluff Golf Course.
The keys — Sophomore Thomas Lindauer finished fifth overall, with a 72. Coach Chris Dillie said that No. 6 golfer Nathan Moore’s round of 78 was crucial to the victory.
The twist — The top five medalists — including Lindauer and Alleman’s Peter Callas, who was third with a 2-under 70 to earn top local honors — received medals with a track and field insignia on the front due to a manufacturer’s error.
Monmouth-Roseville Invitational
The skinny — Traditional golf power Normal University High cruised to a 16-shot win over Dunlap at Gibson Woods in Monmouth.
The keys — The host Titans, who were the top local team by finishing fifth in the 23-team meet with a score of 311, got a 74 from Shane Creighton, who’s been M-R’s best out of the gate this fall.
The twist — After the Titans, the next-best local team in the field was Sherrard, which finished 15th.
Girls tennis
Champaign Centennial Invitational
The skinny — Moline takes third in the meet, won by Effingham St. Anthony.
The keys — Maggie Helms finished fourth in singles play, with senior Kathleen Bracke taking fifth.
The twist — 2007 state doubles qualifiers Jenna Jackson and Samantha Tonn earned the Maroons’ top doubles finish, taking fifth.
United Township Invitational
The skinny — Sterling swept the individual singles and doubles titles to win the meet.
The keys — The Golden Warriors’ Bari Reynolds, who lost earlier this week to crosstown rival Katie Kipping of Sterling Newman, picked up the singles title for Sterling, which scored 14 points.
The twist — Like Reynolds, the Sterling doubles team of Ellen Benson and Mariah Bardo rallied to win in doubles.
