Two letters appear in the Letters to the Editor section, Aug. 28, criticizing former U.S. Rep. Jim Leach’s endorsement of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama. Jim was, and still is, one of the most respected politicians in our country.

The writers of the letters criticized Leach and failed to understand why he endorsed a Democrat during this election cycle. Leach was very clear that he was sick and tired of the fear and smear tactics which have gripped the GOP, perfected during the first Bush candidacy. Jim is realistic in taking note that most loyal Americans are tired of those kinds of tactics.

Jim Leach must be respected for a most courageous act, stepping away from a party he obviously loved to support a man who measures up to his own standards of integrity.

We owe Jim Leach our thanks for his courage to step up to oppose the wrongs of our political system, while not bashing the Republican Party.
