A man wanted in connection with a shooting death near Chicago is in custody, arrested at the Motel 6 in Davenport over the weekend.

Romelle Graham, 25, is accused of murder in the death of Bernard Phillips, who was shot to death during a break-in at his North Chicago home on Aug. 25.

Four others from North Chicago and Waukegan are in custody as well.

According to the North Chicago police:

Phillips, his girlfriend and her two children were asleep in their home at 4:30 a.m. when five people broke into their home by removing a window air conditioner. Family members were awakened and directed downstairs by the intruders.

While attempting to protect his family, Phillips, 38, was shot twice in the chest. He later died at a hospital.

It is unclear the motive of the crime. However, Phillips’ billfold was taken.

During the course of the investigation, police learned that Graham, the suspect, was staying at the Motel 6, 6111 N. Brady St., in Room 237. The room was registered to a Glenda Thomas, a relative of an associate of Graham’s.

Also charged with murder are Ernest Hughes, 22; Michael Reed, 24; Nathaniel Wise, 23; and Paul Alston, 21.
