The Federal Emergency Management Agency has given Mercer County more than $500,000 and Rock Island County more than $170,000 for flood-fighting and cleanup of June flooding of the Mississippi River.

The $679,328 to the two counties is part of more than $10 million that has been distributed in 24 Illinois counties to help state and local governments and eligible private nonprofit organizations pay for disaster-related response and recovery expenses.

Mercer County communities received $506,859. Funding paid for debris removal in Keithsburg, emergency protective measures in Joy, Keithsburg and Bay Island Drainage and Levee District 1; road and sidewalk repairs in Keithsburg and New Boston; and Keithsburg levee breach repairs.

In Rock Island County, $172,469 was provided for debris removal in Carbon Cliff, Buffalo Prairie and Drury Drainage District; emergency protective measures in Carbon Cliff, Hampton, Drury Drainage District, and Big Island River Conservancy District; road repairs in Cordova and Coal Valley townships, and repairs to the Cordova Civic Center Park.

FEMA reimburses 75 percent of the eligible expenses. Emergency protective measures were reimbursed at 90 percent. State and local governments fund the remainder.

Infrastructure eligible for repair funding include certain public roads and bridges, public water control facilities, including dams and drainage channels, public utilities, public buildings and public parks and recreation facilities.
