NAMI celebrates Mental Health Awareness Week

Local chapters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, will host two events in the Quad-Cities in recognition of National Mental Health Awareness Week:

The annual Candlelight Recovery Dinner and Celebration will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at The Lodge, Interstate 74 and Spruce Hills Drive, Bettendorf.

The keynote speaker will be Lana Castle, author of “Bipolar Disorder Demystified” and “Finding Your Bipolar Muse.” The master of ceremonies will be Jay Kidwell, the sports director at WHBF-TV.

There is no charge, although donations will be accepted the evening of the event. For reservations, call Connie Williams at (563) 322-6247, Ext. 224, by Monday, Oct. 6.

A Mind and Body Workshop will be 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at The Lodge in Bettendorf.

The event will include workshops on “Writing for Recovery and/or Publication,” by Lana Castle; “From Taking Notice to Taking Action,” by Rick Shannon of the Iowa Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council; “Creative Listening,” by Jeff Adamson and and Patrick Adams, both from Comedy Sportz; “Universal Drawing Through Information, Application and Affirmation,” by Ralph Iaccarino, an artist; and “Music Therapy Recovery,” by Jennifer Dover, a music therapist.

The cost is $30 for professionals, $5 for the public. Continuing education units are available for $10. The registration deadline is Oct. 6. To register, call (563) 322-6247, Ext. 224.
