UPDATED: A portion of Belmont Road is closed because of a ruptured water main, said Bob Palmer, chief inspector for the City of Bettendorf.
An estimated 50 homes have had water service disrupted because of the break, said Iowa American Water spokeswoman Lisa Reisen
Bettendorf City spokeswoman Lauran Haldeman said Belmont Road from Valley Drive to Scott Community College is closed to traffic. Traffic should access Belmont Road from Middle Road. Belmont Road is on the border of Bettendorf and Riverdale.
Palmer said the water main break occurred about 3:30 p.m. Iowa American Water crews are at the scene and are making repairs, Reisen said. Repairs are estimated to be completed about 9 p.m., she said.
Customers on Belmont Road from Valley Drive to Elk Drive, on Elk Drive and any connecting side streets will have water service termporarily interupted while the repairs are made, Reisen said.
Contrary to rumor, Palmer said the water main did not break because of any construction going on in the area. “These things happen; water mains break,” he said.
People will still be able to get to Pleasant Valley High School for tonight’s football game by using Middle Road to Belmont, Palmer said.
