COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa — If the City Council agrees, the east side of North Main Street in downtown Columbus Junction might have some shade in a few years.

Resident Russ Howell asked the council Wednesday to approve a plan that she and other Trees Forever supporters have developed. The proposal calls for a few trees to be planted along the street north of the former Weber & Huston Feed Mill. The planting would extend an earlier planting created by the building’s current owner.

The council delayed a decision until a formal design is presented. Howell agreed to return next month with the plan.

In other action, the council learned the city’s main grocery store, Econ-O-Foods, should be open by Monday. The store closed in June after the lower east end of the community flooded. Officials also reported progress with other flood recovery efforts, but said questions over the future of the hotel and Subway might force the city to look into developing an abandoned building ordinance.

Patty Winegarden, a resident of Hilltop Drive, raised several concerns, including speed limits on Iowa 92, enactment of an engine brake ordinance and other issues.
