Rock Island Preservation Commission has printed new and improved tour brochures.
The John Looney Legend Tour brochure has 36 full-color pages featuring 50 Rock Island buildings and sites associated with Looney inspired by “Citadel of Sin: The John Looney Story,” by Richard Hamer and Roger Ruthhart.
Other brochures that have been upgraded or reprinted include Rock Island’s Modernistic Architecture; Rock Island History; Stroll These Sidewalks; KeyStone Neighborhood Driving Tour; and 1918 Government Housing. An $11,666 grant from U.S. Department of the Interior Historic Preservation Fund administered by Illinois Historic Preservation Agency plus $5,000 from local match dollars is paying for printing costs.
“All of these brochures except the Looney tour were originally created as part of earlier Historic Preservation Fund grants, but many have been out of print for years,” said Alan Carmen, Rock Island Planning and Redevelopment administrator. “It will be good to have this historical and architectural information back in circulation and available to residents and tourists alike.”
Brochures are available at Rock Island Public Library, 401 19th St., and Rock Island City Hall, 1528 3rd Ave. Downloadable versions are available at rigov.org/visitors/walkingtour.html.
