CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Two former Cedar Rapids school teachers who were arrested at a rally for President Bush and illegally strip searched are rejecting a federal judge’s ruling that reduced their jury awards.

A jury awarded a total of $750,000 to Alice McCabe and Christine Nelson following a trial in June. But, U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade ruled earlier this month that the awards were excessive and lowered the amount to $75,000.

The teachers decided they didn’t want to accept the awards, and Reade has scheduled a new trial for Oct. 27.

The women were arrested in 2004 after attending at a Bush rally in Cedar Rapids.
