CLINTON, Iowa — The Clinton City Council lent its support Tuesday to a March 3 election date on a referendum to fund a new fire station for the city’s north end.
The proposed project includes a 9,063-square-foot fire station just off Main Avenue near Eagle Heights Elementary School, plus an expansion of the Chancy Fire Station that would nearly double its size and a new fire engine.
The total cost for both construction projects and the new fire engine has been estimated at $3.47 million to $3.8 million, but those numbers are likely to increase before the referendum is drafted due to rising construction costs, Fire Chief Mark Regenwether said.
The new station, which will replace the existing Lyons station on Roosevelt Street, is critical to improving response time to the north end of Clinton, Regenwether said. Combined with the expansion of the Chancy station, it will allow ambulances to be stationed at all three stations.
Council member Darrell Smith, 3rd Ward, agreed.
“I think this is just in the interest of better fire protection for the city of Clinton,” Smith said.
Council member Ron Mallicoat, At-Large, said it was important to get the project started as soon as possible because of rising construction costs.
Regenwether said a referendum date of Dec. 2 had been discussed, but the Clinton Community School District is holding a referendum that day, and the city and the school district cannot have an election on the same day because the voting districts are not the same.
Regenwether said the March 3 date would give the department time to educate voters about the need for the project.
