Democratic congressional candidate Colleen Callahan suspended her campaign Friday after her mother passed away at age 84.

Callahan is running against State Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Peoria, and Green Party candidate Sheldon Shafer of Peoria for the 18th Illinois Congressional District seat.

Callahan campaign spokesman Terry Towery said Callahan received word of the worsening condition of her mother, Elaine Callahan, early Friday prior to an interview she conducted with the Herald and Review in Decatur.

Towery said Callahan had enough time to get to Peoria to be with her ailing mother before her passing.

“We knew just as we were going in we got the call that she was not doing well,” Towery said. She did the interview, I don’t know how then we cancelled the rest of the day and got back.”

Towery said Callahan’s mother had suffered from cancer and had been ill for months. He said there is no immediate plan to resume the campaign as of yet, but it would probably be soon.

“Knowing her, she will get back on the trail,” Towery said. “In the meantime, staff will keep working and doing what we need to do.”
