VIOLA, Ill. — A dry Mercer County town could become wet.

Voters in Viola are being asked to allow the sale of liquor. The referendum is on the Nov. 4 ballot.

The question is the result of a new convenience store being constructed along U.S. 67. A Casey’s General store will be built at what has been the Viola All Stop just outside the village limits.

The All Stop did not want to be annexed into town because of the liquor sale ban and because of that, the village lost sales tax and property tax revenue.

“Once the All Stop was sold to the Casey’s store, the village board and some citizens wanted to try and use that opportunity to vote the town wet and try to annex that area in,” said Viola Village President Kirk Doonan. “Right now we get no revenue off of that convenience store.”

There is also a tavern, The City Limits, just outside of Viola, near the new Casey’s site, but they are not seeking annexation.

A pre-annexation agreement has already been drafted with Casey’s. If voters approve lifting the ban of alcohol sales in November, the process will continue with Casey’s.

“We can use any revenue we get,” Doonan said. “It would be a big help.”

Doonan said the village has had to patrol the area near the tavern and former convenience store, but never received any revenue from the location because the two businesses were set up outside of village limits.

Approval would also result in the creation of a liquor control commissioner and liquor control ordinance.
