Q-C hands assist Cedar Rapids flood cleanup

A front page story in last weeks Quad-City Times featured Chad Pregracke, the founder of Living Lands and Waters, requesting help cleaning up the Cedar River in and around Cedar Rapids. My wife, Linda, signed us up as volunteers. We spent the day there Sunday and we were shocked.

It's not jigging or rolling, it's Ecstasy,a dangerous drug

As a young adult, just turning 21, I must say that there are days when I just feel overwhelmed and turn to alcohol. Just a couple of drinks to wind down and try to release some stress. Even after admitting this it truly hurts me to see many young people, including a majority of people I consider very close to me, using pills as a way to relax and calm themselves.

Bush and GOP will leave us in the hole

I love the way Bush and the Grand Ol’ Party manage our finances. They give billions of dollars to the rich via tax cuts. Then to pay for the war and run the country, they use the country’s charge card and borrow $2 trillion from Asia.

      Smoking ban still negotiable

I called the Scott County Health Department and asked if smoking was allowed at the Blues Fest this weekend. Their answer was: Wherever people gather for an event, smoking is not allowed. I asked about the Quad-City Times Bix 7 and she said it applied to that, too. I then asked how it would be enforced. She said the police or public health department would.

i wireless shames QCA with new name

As a great-grandchild of a family who once owned a small farm south of the Quad-Cities, I can say I am angry and sad at the change of the name of The Mark convention center. There was no apparent reason for the change other than a very shrewd and probably lucrative corporate plan.

      Are voters paying attention?

Watching the pitiful performance of our nation’s Congress the past year and a half, I wonder if voters are paying any attention? Do they care?

      Lost Lawn-Boys returned

Thanks for the power of the press. My letter about my stolen lawn mowers (“Lost Lawn-Boys bring sadness”) appeared June 27. I woke up the next morning and the lawn mowers were sitting by my garage.

Teen team rallies for blood center

Donating blood is quick, safe and rather simple. By giving up just an hour of one’s time, three lives can be saved. The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has been dedicated to collecting a safe and plentiful supply of blood in our area since 1974.

      Remember past come election day

I hope when people get ready to vote this fall they remember that President Bush and his Republican cronies let the middle class almost disappear and oil profits soar.

      Turn hope into reality

The most Democratic process we have is to be able to participate in primaries and caucuses. It provides us with the opportunity to select and support the candidate of our choice.

      Nun gives thanks for community

My sincere thanks to all who helped save the house in which I have been living for quite a number of years.

      Incompetency crushes America

When former President Bill Clinton took office the Dow Jones was at 3,300 and NASDAQ was at 700. He left office with the Dow at 10,800 and the NASDAQ at 2,800.

      Reduce, reuse, revive America

Some people say we need to drill in wildlife refuges and off coastal areas to reduce the price of gasoline.

      Show sympathy for pet loss

Sorry there are those who feel that the article on Maple, the therapy dog, was a waste of space. (“Former therapy dog dies after battle with cancer,” June 25) It was a human interest story that reminded us that pets offer us love unconditionally and have an important place in our life.

      Stroke survivors thank QCA

As members of the Genesis Stroke Support Group, we wish to thank the CASI and Genesis staff members who made the luncheon at CASI on May 2 in honor of our 10th anniversary of the Stroke Prevention and Recovery Center such a huge success. Dr. Conway Chin’s presentation was very helpful. It was special to honor how the city of Davenport, Red Hawk Golf Course staff and Western Illinois Therapeutic Recreation students work with us.

      Former Davenport officer remembered

Recently my brother, Gene P. Hardy, passed away unexpectedly. As a 21-year veteran of the Davenport Police Department, who retired from a disability incurred on duty, he was accorded the presence of the Davenport Police Honor Guard at his wake and an escort from the funeral home, past the new police station, and back to the cemetery.

Bush could push U.S. into world war

With regards to the current developments concerning the U.S. trying to put an end to Iran’s nuclear programs. Specifically, it’s something President Bush said: “Our allies understand that a nuclear-armed Iran is incredibly destabilizing, and they understand that it would be a major blow to world peace.”

      Maple's memory merits newspaper story

Regarding Ellen Frantzen’s letter: “Human deaths before canine deaths,” June 28:

Heartland feeding world and gas tanks

As a nation we have been blessed with millions of acres of good, rich farmland. This land is used not only to feed us but also to help feed a fast-growing world population. Now, we are also using this land to grow crops to be turned into fuel.

      Make sacrifices to unite country

Sean Hannity repeatedly states, “America is the greatest country in the world.” Given Hannity’s arrogant presentation, this statement comes off negative to those who see our country’s faults and desire improvement.

      Thanks to leaders for support

Thank you to the leaders of Rock Island, Moline, Davenport and Milan, and the governors of Iowa and Illinois, who have, in separate proclamations, joined their voices in declaring June 28 to be “Pride Day” in the Quad-Cities.

Pride Day bringing unity to the QCA

Thank you for your strong endorsement of June 28 as Pride Day in the Quad-City community, celebrating the spirit and contributions of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.

      Conservation will improve prices

The notion of drilling for more domestic oil to save us from higher prices at the pumps is a dreamed-up fantasy of a desperate public who is grasping at straws and coming up empty.
