Faith, Marismom, you two are writing on the assumption that they are all here under honorable circumstances. Did you miss the comment I made that there are no easy answers to this issue? I stated that throwing them all out is not practical or is blanket amnesty practical either. I felt that it should be handled on a case by case basis. You don't know if any of the undocumented already have criminal records in their home countries or are part of the terrorist groups the president has a war with.

There is one case where a pervert will be sent home to Mexico after he serves his prison sentence for child molestation. We don't know if he was already had a record for that but it's one thing to worry about.

The problem with Lucas is he is so high profile and we don't want our teens drinking and driving. I agree though, I've been known in my past to make a bad judgement and drive. I was in my early twenties so I would hope that as someone gets older maybe they get wiser? His last one was ten years ago and you have to ask how many times in the last ten years did he do it and not get caught?

Betty, I'm ashamed to say I don't even know her name off the top of my head. If he goes she could very well be hired.

I really believe that if you heard the people at the church in Postville talk of the terror in the childrens eyes you wouldn't feel compassion for the people. . Today, I heard of a crying 8 year holding his 10 mo. old brother with a 3 year old sibling at his side afraid he might never see his Mother again. He had no idea where she was or if she would ever be able to come back to him. I heard that the children at the Postville school who are not recent immigrants were having nightmares because they don't under that if ICE could take away their friends parents that the same wasn't going to happen to them. I listen through the tears of tired workers in Postville, the frustration of trying to locate members of families.

I suspect that the people on this blog who have shown such hatred of others have been treated badly themselves. So I will pray for you along with the people of Postville tonight.

reuther and alert,

In Mackinaw City MI most of the population goes on unemployment in the winter because the only industry they have is tourism, and if you want to visit the Upper Penninsula of MI in the winter then you're either an Eskimo or a Green Bay Packers fan. So most of the town collects unemployment so that their business will reopen in the spring. My stepbrother is a lazy a--hole with two kids who lets his wife support him on $15 an hour. He works just enough to get the next 6 months off. They have no money, they are losing their house, but it isn't because the economy is so bad, it's because he won't get another job. Don't you think at some point they would counsel him to find employment in another field? He's an independent contractor now who installs sprinklers and does odd jobs.

These food prices are ridiculous, no matter if you're on food stamps or not. I like how some people on this blog are thinking that only poor people need food stamps. Telling them to just "get a job". You and i both know if only it were that easy. I was a single guy who just got layed off of work. I applied for food stamps and was approved. I was on those for a year, not because i wanted to be on them, but cause i had no other choice. Again, jobs are not easy to come by. I do agree that it is B.S. when someone buys $30 worth of cigs or lottery tickets and then pulls out an EBT card. But who are we to say anything. Yes, I know its our tax money that pays for it, and like every other thing that iowa likes to tax us for, it sucks. But i guess you cant understand it if you haven't had to deal with it. The same applies to welfare checks. I've always said, If i have to take a piss test to get a job, you should have to take a piss test to get government aid.

The thing that bothers me about this guy is he is a liar. You dont have one beer at 2:00 pm and blow a .118 at 5:00 pm. He is a liar or a big time drunk is denial. Bettendorf schools are some of the best in the state. They didnt get that way by being lead by a drunk. Get rid of the guy, he has had one chance to many to kill someone on the highway.

You know I could write what I really feel but seems like most of you would rather just call someone a dumbass instead of understanding their point of view and that is really sad.

I'm with Faith, I challenge each and every one of you to see out a person who immigrated legally to the US from a Latin American country and ask them to tell you their story. You'll be amazed at the amount of hassle they have to go through compared with immigrants from more developed nations. There is bias in the system and until it's addresses by our govt, and until economic conditions in Mexico can sustain it's population there will always be people desperate enough to commit illegal acts to gain a greater freedom.

2cents- American born citizens can't be compared to third world nations because are standard of living is so much higher, even for our poorest. If they fail to take advantage of all our great nation offers and they end up in prison it's comparing apples to oranges.

Mike Olson

PART ONE

1. I am pro-choice.

2. I like tree's & think we should have more of them.

3. I believe we should attempt to rehabilitate people rather than simply engaging in draconian punishments that simply ensure a high rate of recidivism.

4. We are in a process of imprisoning more and more of our population than in times past. Our society is sick and the old "common sense' cures obviously aren't working.

PART TWO

1. This man gave a gun to someone else who actually killed the victim. He was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter.

2. His other charges, aside from shooting someone in the leg, are misdemeanor assault charges or vandalism charges.

3. 30 days or two years in jail is not going to turn this man around. Either on their own would simply push him further into criminal behavior than he has already gone.

CONCLUSION:

A combination of punitive measures & rehabilitative counselling would seem to be a reasonable approach. Strong ties to family & church are good also.

Food pantry. What kinds of things do you donate as I've only been once to take someone. My daughter went and brings me bread mix for a machine. How many poor people use bread machines? Like how much do they get that is taken but not used?

Anyway, I try to always contribute to food drives things that I will eat myself. I've often wondered if they get enough protein donations so always try to include a can of pink salmon. Aldi's is good and cheap. But I just wonder what needy people will eat? Pork and beans is probably good, too, some protein in the beans.

Mexican food if you make it yourself is pretty cheap. Refried beansrice are cheap and fairly nutritious.

Confess I didn't read the article, header was enough. I don't begrudge poor people a helping hand, even charcoal really. Ground beef char broiled tastes better. But a cart full of steaks & luxury stuff regularly w/food stamps kind of ticks me off, once in a blue moon for a treat I wouldn't hold against them.

alertreader, you got a hummer? Lucky you! I just set my feeder out, but it hasn't attracted any yet. We had a couple last year.

penelope, we had our share of that type of thing, too. I never took my kids to McD's too often, just for a treat and even though I had to work, I cooked almost every night a regular meal, meat, potatoes and veggies and/or salad. We had Kraft dinners for fill in and I still love fish sticks. But the odd thing is that my kids all loved homemade split pea soup which is fairly cheap and lasted us at least 3 days. I usually saved up ham bones (now juice)but found ham hocks are just as good for flavor and fairly cheap, then threw in carrots, celery & leaves, & onion, ran it through the food mill. Lentil soup they didn't like so well.

I feel fortunate that I had a job plus help from family so didn't have to worry 2 much abt food budget, and very occasionally we had steak. Now I do splurge on fresh salmon which I love, but we didn't have much fish then.

I understand that places to shop in the inner city are limited and that it might be wonderful to be able to spend money at midnight. I feel the same way on payday. I boot up the computer, check my balance, and off I go. The child looks old enough to be in preschool and to think that she would have to sit in class the next day after her midnight trip disturbs me. Also she is teaching her kid to spend her money as soon as she gets it.

We've had a couple of close calls through the year where we lived paycheck to paycheck and had to choose between groceries and going to the doctor. I've given up eating fruit for weeks so that my kids could eat it. I know 101 ways to cook ground beef. We have almost had to go to a food pantry. Tough times come and go, what I worry about is the patterns that are being set here.

We are teaching the next generations that it's okay to save your money for the cools stuff and let everyone else pay for your necessities.

Mr. Peck, I would suggest writing your complaints to the airport management and leave your personal opinions for something with substance, it seems no one here feels too sorry for you, and I have to agree. Shuttle bus? Are you kidding, it takes MAYBE 10 minutes to walk from the furthest place from the parking lot to the terminal. As others have stated I consider the QC Airport extremely efficient, just as others have stated have you NOT been to O'Hare or Atlanta, or LaGuardia, try finding a spot there and fanagle (sp?) your way around, you will find much more friendly people here at QC than those cities, I guarantee it. Perception is a pretty powerful thing, "shouting" how about an employee enforcing the rules, grow some thicker skin and play by the rules, if you did, ignore him it's really not that big of a deal. As far as the International designation, it is International (within the US); not Intercontinental (overseas) (like Houston, ORD, ATL, MSP),... get it??!!

fallon89: I also spotted that bag of charcol right after I read the headliner.. When Deere and the UAW had the BIG strike in "86" At that time I owned an old motor home, drove it every day to work. I didn't own it long enough to have any principal to sell. wife had a big Lincoln same thing, and we owned two old properties in the middle of the winter with no profit there either.. We wern't eligible for assistance because the UAW wanted the strike and we were not laid off--l--who paid all those great taxes year after year and only finally received food stamps and heat assistance two weeks before we went back to work? That floks was the six month strike, and then we understood what "paying your dues meant." Yeah its kinda hard to get your thinking process right when your high or hanging with the wrong crowd. Im the same age as Pachino, I've served my country, been to college, and have a great job. Usually I don't like to get into this subject as I'm torn over it. Anyway, it's kind of funny in an ironic sort of way that someone posted to a forum where I lurk from Oregon no less on Friday, May 9, about this detention center at the Waterloo cattle fairgrounds, got the dates right, only the implication was more sinister, said it was for "a drill", then linked to a conspiracy-type site that linked to Waterloo and Des Moines papers. Won't post a link to where I saw all that. The one and only comment he got was "Your sources are more than a bit over top. Wingnuts on the loose!" So I guess it was out there in advance that those fairgrounds had been rented by FEMA and/or ICE. Now we know what for, and it turned out to be true.

You can get a lot more w/food stamps than they used to allow. Plus I think a lot of people get WIC in addition to food stamps, don't know if they have that in Chicago.

Years ago I got some tomatoes from a local farmer, and he told me about a gal(s) on welfare who bought a bunch of tomatoes from him and scrambled for jars to can them. Most don't seem to want to learn how to do that any more which is a shame. There is no substitute for home-canned tomatoes.

Also can applesauce when I have apples, not econ to buy at store to can, but it is delicious and lasts a long time.

I've never been on food stamps in my life I don't think, one bad short period, maybe. I buy what I want at the store, but am not in the habit of eating high on the hog. Whenever I can get there, I go to Aldi's and buy what I like from there, they have a lot of quality, inexpensive food. Then I head for one of the other stores. TV dinners are 10/$10, but not good for you to eat too often. One of my favs is, and I can only find it at Wal Mart is the giant elbow macaroni and knockoff Velveeta, sometimes even that is cheap and make mac & cheese. When I do cook chili, casseroles, etc., I usually cook like when kids were home and freeze in ziplock freezer bags. Home made soup is really economical, freeze that, too.

I doubt she can grow her own food unless they have community gardens. Veggies are relatively cheap, but homegrown always nice, I try to can my own tomatoes & fruits when I can get nice stuff cheap, there are lots of ways you can save. I never liked messing with coupon

Would you believe when food stamps first came out I couldn't afford them? My budget allowed $60 a month for groceries, and that included soap and toilet paper. The super brains figuring all this out said I needed to buy $120 worth of food stamps for $70. That extra $10 would have put me in the red, and it was way more than I normally spent. We ate a lot of frijoles and tortillas, and I mean made from dry beans and I pat-pat-patted out those tortillas. I also made my own baby food, so easy it's ridiculous to buy it. Folks would be surprised how far their money will go if they quit thinking food has to come out of a window or a box.

LQQK HERE: one problem folks in poor neighborhoods is lack of access to large grocery stores. Those don't tend to exist in the inner city. The do not have cars or money for cabs - obviously hauling little kids and groceries on two or three city buses does not work very well.

Many folks getting food stamps are working poor - others have psychiatric problems and/or medical ones that make them unable to work. Some are 'slow,' did not go far in school, and really have little capacity to work.

As to shopping at midnight - when you have children and are out of food you go as soon as you get some money to buy milk etc.

As to having babies - let's remember that it takes two to have a baby - the women get the kids to try to support and the blame for needing help doing that - as usual

If people on food stamps would use coupons that would help stretch the food $. If they would buy cheaper cuts of meat that would help also. If they would shop at a regular grocery store instead of a quick shop or convience store the $'s would go farther. A mother and child(ren) quailify for WIC if they meet the Federal Income Guidelines. WIC benefits doesnt effect your food stamps. Each child food package is worth $50-$60 a month. Quaification for WIC is all gross monthly income per household. This applies whether the parents are married or not--if they live in the same household both incomes would be considered. The food package stays the same as long as the income requirements are met. WIC is for pregnant, post partam and children birth to age 5.

I completely agree with college i also saw the abuse working at a grocery store. Unbelievable. While on probation:

He had two criminal charges filed against him,

Did not pay any portion of his fines,

Has not completed any community service requirements.

This judge is an enormous problem.

He did not follow the requiremnts of the probation, yet a few tears (boo friggin hoo) and mommy in tow means he gets another, yet another minimal sentence for what the judge terms "minor" infraction. Apparently fines and community service are meaningless, and the judge does not see any validity or importance in her own sentencing....absolutely amazing.

I used to work at a grocery store thru college. I would get so peeved when food stamp people would come thru my line and buy steaks, chips, pop, cookies, junk food, etc. Then they would whip out their cell phones with their manicured nails/salon hair do's and also be rude to us clerks! I just don't understand how people could be rude to someone who is paying for their grocery bill.

I am not clumping all food stamp people into one group but I would say 80% where like this. What is sad is according to this article if I was single and had a family, I would qualify for food stamps on my 2nd year teaching salary!

What does a can of tuna cost 79 cents? How bout a loaf of bread and some lunch meat, 2 bucks? Peanut Butter 1.79? 5lb. bag of skinless grilled chicken breast 4.99? I can make a list of a ton of inexpensive HEALTHY foods you can live on, on a budget, i know because I buy them every week, with my own money. I wont lump all food stamp recipients into the same category. I know some decent people that just need a little help getting on their feet.

I saw a woman at Wal Mart the other day I almost wanted to slap her. She had Steak, salmon, crab meat, shrimp, every expensive piece of food you can buy, and whipped out a link card to pay for it. Then she puled out a wad of 20's and bought cigarettes and beer. If you have enough money for smokes and booze, but not enough for food, you need to seriously get your priorities straight.

Or, here's an option - birth control. If you are having a hard time making ends meet before you conceive - my thought would be to prevent conception. But it's virtually the opposite, most of these folks have more kids so (or because) they can keep getting WIC and LINK and Section 8 for as long as those babies keep coming.

And go at me with the "it's a sin" spiel. It's a greater sin to make your children starve and live substandard lives. Don't expect me to subsidize your desire to be a mommy. If you can't afford to feed them, don't have them. I don't care what color your skin is.

Another thought would be to marry your baby's daddy but - oh that's right - if you do that, you don't qualify for WIC or you get less of it, can't remember which. I know a couple who are going to wait until their baby is 4 to get married. If they got married now, mom and the baby wouldn't get free health care.

Getting a job would be the most obvious solution here but that's naughty to say.

Realistic, technically speaking you are correct. HOWEVER, these Native Americans hunted the plains and migrated all over the continent to follow the game while Europe was still in the Dark Ages. Then after the Europeans discovered this new continent, they came over and, in effect, destroyed the Native American's way of life by bringing diseases they have never seen before and forced them to the reservations.

Who was the judge? Who was the prosecutor? Did he agree with this?

So once again a VIOLENT CRIMINAL is let loose on society because of a spineless judge.

I want the name of the judge, if I or anyone I know gets arrested I want that judge. That way I could remind him/her of the slap on the wrist given to a violent career criminal. I would expect my charges to be dropped and the case dismissed.

The judge should retire, if they cannot see what this individual has done and continues to do they should quit.

If this guys hurts someone I wonder if you could bring charge against the judge for not protecting the public. One thing they are SWORN to do when they become a judge.

Outsourced, possibly, I don't know, but could also be that work was redesigned with elements of one man's work being given to others. We had machines run by one man, who stood by while the machine cycled, put into cells, so that the man spent cycle time loading and unloading other machines, moving constantly, never standing. Idle hands are the devil's workshop, and though we're not making watches, we are getting paid to make combines/tractors/backhoes. It wasn't easy, young folks, isn't easy now.

But perhaps this is a temporary thing or if not temporary, a situation where a worker might find a job in another Deere facility. I was transferred from one to the other IH plant, long, long ago.

Atheist - I was gonna stay off this topic, but I just have to say thank you!! Once again, you prove to be a much more loving, tolerant person than most so called Christians I know. If only everyone would take your morals to heart what a beautiful world we would live in. Love is the most important gift we have and if we do not use it properly what's the use?!

Gay marriage as such is probably wrong, but why all the hate?

Part of the problem is those who immigrate here legally do so to be Americans and adapt to the American way of life. Most of those here illegally have no intention at all of assimilating into American society, instead they break laws and then of coarse act like like have a civil right to be here.

my 2 cents-

I did look into Mexican immigration laws...from what I understood, even if you do everything they say you need to do to become legal, you are never considered a citizen on the level of someone born there.

Hey I just finished reading all these comments and I have an idea. Why don't we all start a class action suit against the Mexican government ?? We can charge them with lets see illegal dumpimg ?

Has anyone ever checked into Mexico's immigration laws? Interesting reading..

Michael you said " I asked you why Illegal immigrants aren't back home trying to make their country a better place?" I noticed that chachoochoocha didn't have an answer. The question makes sense to me. Mexico has oil, fertile farm land, and industries moved there by American companies. What more do they need. Oh thats right, they would have to fight the corrupt Mexican government and it's much easier to take what old Uncle Sam doles out for free, while they send part of their money back to Mexico, beefing up that economy while draining ours.

12-12-2012 - Just like greeneyed said - My ancestors (a LONG time ago) immigrated here. I have no problem with immigration in and of itself. It's just that in my work and life in general I see too much abuse of our system by illegal aliens. They are more than welcome to be here if they want to learn to speak our language and be LEGAL!!!! Also, they need to learn to fly and respect the American flag!!! I am VERY familiar with the atrocities in the way we dealt with Native Americans. That was wrong!!! However, just opening our borders and allowing illegals to flood our country is only gonna make a bad situation worse.

chav - I never, ever talked crap to anybody until you showed your ignorant little blob of nothingness so don't even go there. As anyone here on a regular basis knows you are the first person I have ever spoken to in such a way. Don't ever go there again, or we will have this argument in person dumbass. BTW - mid 7 figures FYI. I doubt you make more.

yeah, a 6 pack of Koolaid squeezy things (haha, don't know the name) is just $1.....$1!!!!!

You can't beat that, they need to do smart shopping, hell a can of Pringles is just a $1, so there are items these families can buy that are still cheap, much like everyone else is saying.

And just like the rest of you, I am also taken back the fact that these people are getting FREE.....food and still complaining. How about this, don't have a child as a teen and go to school, at least finish high school so you aren't in this position. And don't you think if you can't afford the first child, WHY HAVE THE 2nd ONE

????? Some even have 3 or 4, I just don't get it.

Some people just confuse me to no end.

Great place to take the family is Bucks. Too bad the Airliner, Peaches and Cream, King Cobra's, The Morrocco and Club Matador are Closed, about the only place left is the Camels Nest. In all honesty there are fewer problems in the Black Rock Island bars than in The District. The kids drinking in The District are just killing the business climate downtown. The cops should send them to the west side to drink cause the brothers would keep them in line.

Once again people blur the issue with legal immigration and illegal immigration. Nobody on this post has denied legal immigrants the right to work in this country. But some people believe that the mear fact that they are here entitles them to all the advantages of citizens. That is where they are wrong. So they go back into history and try to validate their argument with situations that happend 100 years ago. Which shows how weak their argument is. Their lack of patience and honorability for doing it the right way but expecting to jump ahead of those lawabiding immigrants who RESPECT the country and it's laws, shows their lack of respect and honor for the things they will recieve.

Rice is cheap too. A ten pound bag of rice will last around a month and you can put a lot of things on it. Gardening comes to mind. There are many ways to get creative if you aren't lazy. If I knew I was only going to have x amount of dollars for a month to eat on I could figure out a way to feed all mouths in the house 3 squares easy. I've done it many times when hubby was laid off or whatever comes our way. I don't buy convienience foods for one. Way too expensive and you get more box than anything. Did the article mention the lady uses coupons? Nope. I have been amazed at how much money you can save using coupons. You can get a whole cart full of food for very little money using coupons. There are many many ways to save $'s if you try. But you have to do a little leg work for them. It's not that hard. Complaining doesn't get food. Prices are not just high for food stamp recipients EVERYBODY has the same issue. And Kingsford is a top name brand costing the most of the charcoals!!!

Which is exactly what this 30 day stint will be for Mr.Pachino. Come on somewhere to sleep, money on his books and unlimited use of the phone system. What a joke!!

He gets to rest his body, catch up on sleep, detox from the illegal substances before he goes on his next crime spree. Anyone wanna place bets on when we see his face plastered all over the Times again?? My bet is the day he gets released.

will, Tucson AZ is the fastest growing city in America. Phoenix & Las Vegas in the top ten. Like I said, you don't know much about your country.

atheist, solar "farms" are a scifi fantasy in any large way. The places you speak of are the most susceptible to airborne damage to solar panels. "Col;lateral damage"? You sound like the off roaders that can't understand why ripping around tearing up plantlife that took 100 years to grow is a bad thing. I'm all for solar energy, wind, geothermal, etc. But I'm also pragmatic that it's not going to happen tomorrow. If it were, we'd see the opportunities blossoming. It's not going to be "one day nothing the next day everywhere". Just as water, steam, petroleum all took great amounts of time, so will new forms. Supply, demand, all interwoven, no "chicken or the egg" moment. That's why even recreational lands will be a large consideration. You can't sensibly "just" look at solar panels as the magic bullet.

I am alittle offended because this is really biased in that most fmilies who recive food stamps do work but still have trouble making ends meet. This really is not a well thought out article and tends to leave people think all on food stamps get that much which is simply not true. I don;t know about IL haveing not worked for that state. But in Iowa what you get is income based. People think if you are on aide you are lazy this may be true in some cases however the majority just need a hand up thye work and pay taxes. I really belive as the world is today people lack compassion for anyone. I pay taxes no refund for me I have no problem with my tax dollars going to help people however there is room for improvment in the system better job training for one not everyone has the ability to go to college. 12-21-2012 -

I have never done a family tree or anything, but I think it is safe to say that my ancestors were immigrants. I have never tried to deny that.

But, I WAS born here. The law says that makes me a citizen, so, yes, I DO have a birthright to this country. That is what I am talking about on here, the LAW. I have no problem with people from other countries coming here, but it needs to be done the right way.

I am not making light of what happened to the Indians, the things that happened to them were/are a shameful part of our history. But we are talking about NOW and what it means to be a citizen NOW. Why is it so much to ask for people to take the legal channel to be part of this country?
